Have you ever noticed how a satisfying plate of Mang Inasal extra rice or a mountain of Chowking Chao Fan immediately makes you want to take a siesta? As a Filipino, rice is my ultimate comfort food, but the “food coma” it causes is actually a physiological reaction called postprandial somnolence.
When I consume a heavy serving of white rice, my body breaks those refined carbohydrates down into glucose very quickly. This causes my blood sugar to spike, prompting my pancreas to release a large amount of insulin to manage the surge.
This insulin spike doesn’t just move sugar; it also triggers the brain to increase the production of serotonin and melatonin. These are the same chemicals that regulate sleep and relaxation, which is why I often feel like nodding off at my desk.
Being 77 kg with a BMI in the overweight range, my body may work even harder to process these massive glucose loads. Since I am documenting my blood sugar journey, I’ve realized that these “rice naps” are actually a clear sign of a significant glucose spike.
My goal is to use my daily logs to see if switching to smaller portions or different grains can stop this afternoon slump. I want to enjoy my favorite Pinoy meals without needing a bed immediately afterward.
